New Gateway to Swansea SA1 Waterfront
Work is underway on a major multi-million pound project to provide a new gateway entrance leading into the heart of the WDA’s £200 million SA1 Swansea Waterfront development.
The £4.8million project, which has received £1.7million of Objective One funds, will also open up acres of serviced development land providing significant new investment opportunities.
The new entrance will open up immediate and more distant waterfront views and be a key element in establishing Swansea as a Waterfront City.
Economic Development and Transport Minister Andrew Davies said: “The SA1 development is a demonstration of the Welsh Assembly Government’s commitment to spreading prosperity to all parts of Wales. The new and rejuvenated buildings are creating a real buzz around the city and I’m pleased that Objective One funding is helping our Development Agency to deliver the kind of waterfront facilities which we believe will put Swansea on a par with other cities throughout the UK and beyond. This new gateway entrance will create the right first impressions for potential investors.”
The new Fabian Way junction - opposite Port Tennant Road - will be controlled by traffic lights and the access into SA1 will be via a dual carriageway with a central reservation flanked by footpaths, cycleways and public realm areas.
It will lead onto a new roundabout at Langdon Road which will be completely re built and partly realigned to provide a tree lined avenue leading onto Kings Road and the Technium business innovation centres.
The new route will open up development opportunities on either side of Landgon Road with land adjacent to Fabian Way earmarked for car parking, offices and commercial undertakings while land on the Prince of Wales dock side will be reserved for residential use.
WDA Area development manager Steve Piper said the new gateway would be the main artery into SA1 and provide a fitting entrance into the site, opening up waterfront vistas.
“It will also be critical for opening up and extending the site in a comprehensive form rather than piecemeal developments.
“It has the potential to change perceptions of the east of the city and provide pedestrian and public transport links into the area and strengthen pedestrian and cycleway links with the neighbouring communities.”
