Operating
from its Llanelli base, the Calsonic Technology Centre Europe
supplies advanced engineering design and process expertise to the
seven Calsonic manufacturing centres in Europe.
Opened 4 years ago, initially with
100 people, the Centre now employs 250 highly qualified engineers
and technologists.
In the year 2000, 50% of UK cars
will have air conditioning as standard. Working closely with vehicle
manufacturers, Calsonic engineers design and develop the products
that will make this possible in terms of cost and performance.
One of the deciding factors in
siting the Centre at Llanelli was the proximity of the University
of Wales, Swansea and the Swansea Institute's, Design Technology
Centre. These institutions contribute research expertise and also
share facilities with Calsonic.
University
of Wales, Swansea has 5 acknowledged Centres of Expertise, part
of 25 such Centres in Wales. They form a programme, unique in Europe,
of accrediting specialist groups recognised for the quality of their
research and their proven track record of working with industry.
Calsonic also works closely with
the nearby Carmarthenshire College. More than 700 Calsonic production
and office staff are involved in National Vocational Qualifications.
This is a massive training commitment and the College has on-site
staff to facilitate training and assessment.
