| Swansea provides
important maritime links to the Atlantic Ocean, Northern Europe
and Ireland. Operated by Associated British Ports, Swansea Dock
is a major port with container facilities, catering for vessels
of up to 30,000 tonnes. Swansea Docks process the third highest
tonnage of cargo in South Wales and, on average, four million
tonnes of cargo pass through the docks each year. The docks
can handle roll-on roll-off cargoes, container, bulk and project
cargoes. The roll-on, roll-off terminal is used by the Swansea
Cork Ferries, which operate regular crossings to the Irish Republic.
There is also nearby access to a deep-water terminal and private
wharfage services.
